Genuine silver leaf – requires a varnish coating for durability
We produce genuine silver leaf from pure silver. Depending on the desired thickness of the leaf, it undergoes one or two filling and beating processes. The standard variety is just beaten once between specially coated glassine paper. The extra thin silver leaf, on the other hand, undergoes an additional beating process in a so-called gold-beating mould.
Silver leaf can be used on picture frames, furniture and interior design fittings. It is important to remember that the extremely thin silver leaf has a tendency to oxidise – a particular challenge when it comes to further processing. A drawback for all types of silvering is that the silvered surface must ultimately be protected against oxidisation by applying a varnish. This requires extreme delicacy and lots of experience when it comes to selecting the right varnish – you will find more about this issue under gilding techniques.
